What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is an uncommon appearance of asbestos cancer that grows in the mesothelial cells. These cells form tissue that envelop or line the lungs, heart, and stomach. The mesothelial cells safeguard these organs by manufacturing a greasing fluid that permits them to move about smoothly.

In the United States, asbestos is devastating cause of mesothelioma. This always happens through prolonged exposure to asbestos in an occupation environment. Also, it has been discovered that not only workers in asbestos presence can develop this disease. People working near those who are using asbestos products can also develop this disease. Exposure from family members and their work clothes can also cause mesothelioma.

Risk Indicators

The major risk indicator for mesothelioma is asbestos contact or exposure. Prolonged exposure to asbestos through job, or during building demolition or remodeling always increases your chances. Other known causes are exposure to zeolites, therapeutic thoratrast radiation, and chronic inflammation of the pleura. However, cases associated with them are few and rare. Majorly, asbestos is always the cause.

Types of Mesothelioma

There are three types of mesothelioma:  Pleural Mesothelioma which accounts for over ¾ of all diagnosis, Peritoneal Mesothelioma which accounts for less than 20%, and Pericardial Mesothelioma which is the most uncommon and account for low cases.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Signs of this disease are:
•    shortness of breath
•    chronic cough,
•    chest pain
•    fatigue
Most times, mistakes have been made to associate these symptoms with minor and less serious ailments like colds or flu.

Key Statistics

Between 2,000 and 4,000 people are annually diagnosed with mesothelioma. This cancer has a very long dormancy stage hence manifestation is always late in life and affects the men most. Each year, between 2,000 and 4,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma. This cancer has a very long latency stage, and most often shows up late in life and primarily in men. Regretfully, patients never survive it after diagnosis because it is often far advanced by the time a diagnosis is made.
