Mesothelioma Staging – TNM Staging System

In judging the spread of mesothelioma and the subsequent treatment options, doctors often use a tiered system of stages. The TNM takes into account the size of the tumor, the areas it affects, and the metastasis of the growth to determine what action is appropriate.

When mesothelioma has reached its third stage, it has usually spread beyond just the chest and begun to affect the diaphragm as well. With Stage III mesothelioma, surgery is still an option, though it is more difficult than in previous stages.
