Pleural Mesotheloma- Facts you should know

Pleural Mesotheloma- Facts you should know

Mesothelioma is the commonest primary tumor of the pleura.There are two main types;

1]the localized mesothelioma{benign and malignant types} 2]the diffuse malignant mesothelioma

There is a strong correlation between asbestos exposure and the development of mesothelioma,although a history of exposure is not always obtainable in patients who have mesothelioma.There are 2 types of asbestos fibres based on crystalline structure;a-serpentine{chrysolite}and b-amphibole.

Included within the amphibole are amosite,tremolte,crocidolite and anthophyllite.The most harmful is the crocidolite or better known as blue asbestos.

Localised Bening Mesothelioma

These characteristically arise from the inner layer of the pleura

Symptoms and signs;

-chest pain -shortness of breath -most of the times there are no symptoms{asymptomatic},these tumors are usually discovered on routine chest x-ray -hypoglycemia {low blood sugar}is sometimes associated Treatment

Surgery is the main stay of treatment,the tumor is removed by the surgeon and reccurence is rare and when it happens transition to malignant form of tumor should be suspected.

Localised Malignant Mesothelioma

Symptoms and Signs;

-chest pain -cough -fever -shortness of breath

Surgery is also the treatment of choice,although prognosis is very poor

Diffuse Malignant Mesothelioma

This type of mesothelioma can arise form any part of the pleura and often extend into the peritoneum as well as into the ribs and chest wall{peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma}.It also spreads commonly to the liver, brain and adrenal glands.Histologically malignant mesothelioma have both fibrous{sarcomatous mesothelioma}and epithelial{papillary}components.

-CT scan of the chest is extremely useful in diagnosing the extent of the tumor. -Needle biopsy{the surgeon inserts a special needle into the pleura to take samples of the tumor which is taken to the laboratory to see under the microscope}of the pleura is a must.
-Pleural fluid is aspirated and taken to the lab for microscopic examination.

Staging of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

-Stage 1:Involvement of ipsilateral pleura and lungs{affecting just one lung either left or right lung}
-Stage 2-Involvement of chest wall,mediastinum{structure at the middle of the heart},pericardium or contralateral{opposite side}pleura
-Stage 3-Distant blood spread into other organs eg brain,adrenals

Treatment is discouragingly ineffective and survival rarely longer than 2 years with an average of 10-14 months.In selected cases with stage 1 a radical sugery-pleuropneumonectomy{removal of lung and pleura} may be effective,but long term survival is rare.Primary radiation therapy may be used also. Combination chemotherapy using either single agent or combination protocols have also been used but the outcome remains dismal.

Important questions that you should ask your doctor before you recieve Mesothelioma Chemotherapy

Important questions that you should ask your doctor before you recieve Mesothelioma Chemotherapy

Before choosing chemo as a treatment option, you should understand the expected benefits, side effects, and risks. There are some questions that you should ask your doctor before you start a chemotherapy treatment. The answers you will get will prepare you for the likely outcome.

These are some of the questions you should ask your doctor:

-What is the goal of chemotherapy for my cancer?

-What are the chances that the chemotherapy will work?

-After chemotherapy, will I be cured, in remission, or relieved of my symptoms?

-Are there other ways to get to the same goals?

-How will I know if the chemotherapy is working?

-If the chemotherapy does not work, are there other treatments for me?

-What are the risks and side effects of the chemotherapy I will be taking? How do side effects of this chemo compare with side effects of other treatments?

-How will I get the chemotherapy, how often, and for how long?

-Where will I be given the drugs? -What can I do to get ready for treatment and decrease the chance of side effects?

-Will I need to change my diet in any way? My activities? My work? Exercise? Sexual activities?

-Will I also need surgery, radiation, or both? If so, when and why? What results can I expect from each type of treatment? -If I have chemo after surgery or radiation, will it kill any remaining cancer cells? Could chemo be used alone?

-Could I take part in a clinical trial?

-How much will chemotherapy cost? Will my health insurance cover it? -If the insurance company asks for a second opinion, or if I would like to get one, can you suggest someone for me to see?

Here are some things you should do to help you remember the doctors answers:

-Take notes during your visits. Don’t feel shy about asking your doctor to slow down if you need more time to write. Ask questions if you don’t understand something.

-If you can, use a tape recorder during your visit so you won’t miss anything.

-Consider taking a friend or relative with you to help you understand what your doctor says during your visit and to refresh your memory afterward.

Mesothelioma victims must seek as much knowledge as they can get about mesothelioma so that they can cope maximally with treatment.

Is Filing a Mesothelioma Lawsuit a Choice You Should Consider?

Is Filing a Mesothelioma Lawsuit a Choice You Should Consider?

Since the beginning of the twentieth century asbestos manufacturers knew that the products they were making exposed millions of people to life-threatening health risks. And yet they continued to manufacture their products and selfishly ignored the fact that what they were selling was literally killing people.

In their pursuit of profits they willingly chose to sweep this knowledge under the rug and look the other way.

Many companies were banking on the fact that it often takes decades before mesothelioma cancer, which is one of the asbestos-related diseases, to appear.. Since asbestos had been widely used since the Industrial Revolution, and, because its use grew exponentially during World War II, a huge number of people began to get sick and die from mesothelioma during the 1970s.

Although it took many decades before the public became aware and outraged at this blatant disregard to their wellbeing the tide began to turn during the 1970s.

At that point, numerous attorneys began to make a concerted effort to help people who had been victimized by the asbestos manufacturers and their insurance companies who knowingly went along for the ride.

Some people believe that you have to have worked for an asbestos company in order to file a mesothelioma lawsuit. This is not necessarily the case. Even if you believe that you were unwittingly exposed to asbestos in any way you might want to meet with a mesothelioma attorney as a prerequisite to filing a mesothelioma lawsuit.

Mesothelioma litigation can be a long and drawn out process. Before you decide whether you want to initiate a mesothelioma lawsuit it will help if you understand your options and what legal rights are available to you.

If you have become ill and have been diagnosed with an asbestos related disease then one of the things that you must be aware of is that your ability to file a mesothelioma lawsuit is restricted by a statute of limitations. This well defined time frame within which you must file your lawsuit varies from one state to another.

If you attempt to file a lawsuit after that time period has expired your chances of winning your case will have diminished dramatically.

To ensure that the law can protect you mesothelioma lawyers will have to figure out when and how you or your loved one was exposed to asbestos fibers. You should also know that even if your loved one has died you could still have the right to file a mesothelioma lawsuit.

An experienced mesothelioma attorney can explain mesothelioma lawsuits and answer all of your questions in depth.
